Birds

Ja, de vogelslinger is klaar! Het is een cadeautje voor één van mijn vriendinnen. Maar eerst wil ik jullie laten zien wat Kathy mij nog meer stuurde, het leek wel Sinterklaas!

Yep the bird garland is finished. It is a present for my friend, but first I want to share what Kathy has sent me, it just felt like Christmas in November:

I told you already that Kathy has given me the lovely vintage bear Christmas ornament in the middle, but on top of that she sent me a beautiful self made box, some lovely charms, well too much to mention as you can see for yourself. Now there is bird here too. I love that bird-cage-including-bird pendant on the left. I was looking for one for ages, but now Kathy has sent me the perfect one. Believe me this girl knows how to read your mind. Thanks a million for all your generous gifts, Kathy! 

Ik liet jullie het oude kerst beertje al zien. Maar dat was nog lang niet alles. Kathy had zelf een allerliefst doosje gemaakt en stuurde mij hele lieve bedeltjes en nog veel meer, kijk zelf maar. Natuurlijk staat ook op deze foto een vogel. Links beneden zit  hij in het kooitje. Ik was al zo lang naar zoiets op zoek. Ik denk dat Kathy gedachten kan lezen, ik vind deze helemaal mooi.  Bedankt Kathy voor je mooie cadeautjes!

Back to the garland: 

It's about 5 meters/yards, so that it can easily cross my friend's  living room. The birds are made of paper from Eline's Huis' line. This garland is not in her book, as it is my own design. I drew a bird (as well as a 'reverse' bird) template and a wing template and glued 44 birds together to 22 birds. Then I added eyes by using a pearl pen, glittered the beaks,

Nu terug naar de slinger. Hij is ongeveer 5 meter lang geworden. Ik gebruikte papier van Eline's Huis lijn, maar deze slinger staat niet in haar boek, ik ontwierp hem zelf. Ik tekende een vogel, zijn  spiegelbeeld, een vleugel en lijmde 44 vogels aan elkaar. Vervolgens gaf ik de vogels met een pearl pen oogjes en voorzag de de snavels van glitter.

After that I crocheted all birds on a cord, one looking to the right the next one to the left and so on. 

Daarna bracht ik nog een glitteraccentje op de vleugels en op de staart aan. Elk vogeltje kreeg onderin een gaatje met daarin een bosje lintjes. Als laatste haakte ik alle vogels aan een koord, een vogel naar links kijkend, de volgende naar rechts, enzovoorts.

And this is the finished project, all with 2nd hand materials, except for the 'inch' ribbon.

Heleen, one of the Dutch sisters, inspired me. She makes embroidered bags all the time and sells them in their shop. 

Heleen, één van de Dutch Sisters, inspireerde mij. Zij maakte al ik weet niet hoeveel prachtige tassen en verkoopt ze in hun winkel. 

This weekend my daughter and I went to Flavourites live, where I bought this cute  kitchen timer. 

Dit weekend waren mijn dochter en ik op Flavourites Live, waar ik deze geinige keukenwekker kocht. 

And we did a lovely 'pak en plak' workshop and glued small pieces of paper on birds houses.

 We won cards for this event at the 101 woon ideeën blog, thanks! I'll tell you more about this fun event later.

Vintage and new Christmas finds

Hoewel ik denk dat niemand hier in Nederland zijn of haar huis al in de kerststemming heeft gebracht (Nee duhhh, niemand wil natuurlijk de goede Sint voor het hoofd stoten), is het natuurlijk niet te vroeg voor wat Kerst shoppen.

Though I think that no one in the Netherlands already started to decorate for Christmas,
 (It seems that our Santa who is hanging around in the Netherlands right now, isn't a fan of Christmas decoration and hey who wants to annoy the holy guy who is giving the most precious presents? Not me). 

it isn't too early to do some Christmas shopping. 

Deze schatjes kocht ik bij Blokker, allemaal goedkoper dan 2 euro. Ik heb al een tijdje iets met kabouters...en dan mogen paddestoelen natuurlijk ook niet ontbreken. 

I have something with gnomes, I told you before. And what is a gnome without a mushroom? These figurines are all glass traditionally blown and for sale in the Dutch Blokker for less than 2 euro each. 

Vandaag begon de Kerst verkoop in de kringloop, dus fluks er heen. Laten we eens zien wat LiLi in haar mandje meebracht:

Today the annual Christmas sale at the thrift store started. So I went there and did some shopping there as well, let's take a look: 

Another mushroom! Vintage is still the best don't you think?

Nog een paddestoel, toch blijven de oude het leukst, vinden jullie niet? 

This is my absolute favorite find. Santa in an 'aeroplane thing'. It even has a glass hook to hang the ornament horizontally. The weather over here is still quite grey, hence the photos are dark, sorry.

Dit is mijn absolute favoriet van vandaag. De kerstman in een vliegtuigachtig ding. Het vliegtuigje kan doordat er een extra haakje aan het ornament gemaakt is ook horizontaal hangen. Sorry voor de donkere foto's, maar het is nu eenmaal donker weer.

Ik was ook blij met mijn vintage kerstboompje met echte glazen ballen. 

A whole bunch of tree toppers. All glass, all traditionally blown. Mmm how many trees do you think we will have in our Christmas home?

Voorts vond ik een hele bos pieken. Mmm hoeveel kerstbomen denken jullie dat wij straks in huis hebben?

 Not that many. Last year I had a small gathering of tree topper in vases, I'm planning to do that this year too, just add a few toppers ;-). 

Niet zoveel hoor, ik ben van plan om hetzelfde te doen als vorig jaar en een hoekje te maken met pieken in glaswerk.

Nog een piek, één van de betere. 

This should be the best one, except one of the bells is broken :-(, but I couldn't leave it for 15 cents! One day I'll find a bell to replace the broken one. I love the tarnished silver, which indicates that this is an old one. Well how to recognize vintage Christmas ornaments? 

En dit zou dan de beste piek moeten zijn, maar helaas is er een klokje gebroken. Misschien lag hij daarom niet in de 'dure' vitrine en kostte deze maar 15 cent en kon ik hem niet laten liggen. Ik loop nog wel eens tegen zo'n klokje aan. Aan het model maar ook aan de kleur, het ietwat vergeelde zilver, kun je zien dat dit echt een oude piek is. Hoe kun je nog meer zien dat je met oude kerstversiering  te maken hebt?

The one on the left is the oldest, you can see that as the hanging system (sorry I don't know the word, not even in Dutch) is (tarnished) silver metal and always small. The one below is a traditional glass ornament too, but newer, the hanging system is wider. The one on the right is a new one too, traditionally Christmas ornaments are mercury glass, this one is clear glass though the top is shaped traditionally. The glitter is quite silvery which indicates not so old. The reason for buying is that I like it!

De kerstbal links is het oudste van deze^ 3, dat kun je zien aan hoe hij opgehangen wordt. De top van de bal is klein en het zilveren dopje dat het haakje klemt is donker zilver. Een oude kerstbal is geblazen en niet geperst. Aan de onderste kerstbal met de brede top kun je zien dat het hier om een nieuwere bal gaat, weliswaar een traditioneel geblazen en apart model. De bovenste rechter bal is de nieuwste. Oude ballen zijn altijd verzilverd, maar ook aan het glitter kun je zien dat het hier om een nieuwere bal gaat,  wel is deze traditioneel geblazen. Het kleine dopje glimt nog, ook een teken van nieuwigheid. 

The Christmas bell on the left is probably from the 80-ties. The top is colored, typical for that period. This color is a price indication. (all red tops: 1 euro, blue tops 2 euro etc). The other 3 ornaments are from the 60-ties, I have a lot like these from my parents. As I break a few ornaments every year I always buy vintage Christmas ornaments when the price is right. 

Het kerstklokje rechts komt waarschijnlijk uit de 80-er jaren toen het heel gebruikelijk was dat de warenhuizen hun kerstballen van gekleurde dopjes lieten voorzien om zo de prijs aan te geven (rood was 1 gulden, blauw 2 enzovoorts). De andere 3 ballen zijn uit de jaren 60, ik heb er nogal wat in deze trant, maar omdat ik elk jaar wel wat ballen breek koop ik ze altijd als de prijs laag is.

I couldn't resist these. I think these look so American. These are probably from the 70-ties. They shout: "Barbara, queen of vintage Christmas ornaments and Shiny Brites", too me. 

Deze gekleurde ballen kon ik toch niet weerstaan. Ik denk dat ze uit de 70-er jaren zijn. Ze roepen: 'Barbara, koningin van de vintage kerstballen en Shiny Brites'. 

This new one can be part of my Christmas decoration too, as I love all glass ornaments. You can see that it's new because of the gold top and the white glitters, but still this one is traditionally made. 

Hier een nieuwe 'bal', maar hij kan goed in mijn verzameling omdat ik van allerlei soort traditionele kerstballen houd. Je kan aan het goudkleurige topje en aan het witte glitter zien dat hij nieuw is. 

Our thrift store has a special book case filled with vintage (=expensive) ornaments, but these two were amongst the new ones, so I had to pay only 15 cents for these birds :-). If a bird has a silk tail it is almost for certain a good one. There should be painted eyes too. The clip should be tarnished silver. Here the lower one is the eldest.

Onze kringloop had een speciale vitrine voor de oude (=dure) kerstballen, maar de 2 bovenstaande vogeltjes zaten daar niet in, dus hoefde ik maar 15 cent per stuk te betalen. :-) Als een vogeltje een zijden staart, zoals bovenstaand,  heeft is het al een heel goed teken. Als hij ook nog opgeschilderde ogen heeft en de clip heeft een oud zilveren kleur, dan zit je goed. In dit geval is de onderste de oudste vogel.   

Now you are all vintage Christmas ornaments experts.  Just remember that I write this from experience with Dutch vintage Christmas ornaments. This owl is vintage too and it is painted with a chalky paint, I have some more old ornaments painted this way. 

Hoera nu zijn jullie allemaal experts in het vaststellen van de ouderdom van een kerstbal! Allemaal wijze uiltjes. Deze kocht ik ook nog bij de kringloop. Hij is geverfd met een kalkachtige verf, ik heb er  nog een paar die met die verf versierd zijn.

I'll show more gifts from this nice lady in next post (yes there is a cliff hanger) and the theme will be birds!

Keepsake festive year book

Ik heb de titel van deze post al zo'n 12 keer veranderd, steeds voldoet hij niet, maar ik heb nu besloten maar gewoon te gaan schrijven, misschien bedenk ik gaandeweg nog wat beters. Anita van Castles, Crowns  and Cottages had een prachtige post gemaakt over de wereld van bloggers en hun vriendschappen. Die post sprak mij heel erg aan. De vriendschap en vrijgevigheid die je onder elkaar vindt kan haast niet door buitenstaanders begrepen worden. Een goed moment om jullie allemaal te bedanken voor jullie vriendschap en aardige woorden. 

I have changed the title of this blog about a dozen times already and still I'm not satisfied, but I decided to write along. Maybe a better idea will cross my mind while doing so. Anita of Castles, Crowns and Cottages has made a post about the wonderful world of blogging friends. She did a great job sharing her feelings, that I can totally relate to, about blog friendship which can best be understood by bloggers themselves. The inspiration, the friendship we share, it is great to be part of that world. I want to thank you all for that. 

This post will be an example of what I consider bloggers' generosity and talent.

 A while ago I received this birthday present: It made me speechless, which is quite uncommon, I can assure you that! Luckily I recovered from that. 

Btw I bought some extra space at Bloggers' thanks for the advice!

Deze post zal ook over zo'n voorbeeld van blogvriendschap gaan en over een heel getalenteerde dame. 

Een tijdje geleden ontving ik dit verjaardagscadeau dat me helemaal van de sokken blies, ik was sprakeloos en daar is echt wat voor nodig, maar goed...ik heb me inmiddels hersteld.

Btw ik heb wat extra foto ruimte gekocht bij Blogger, bedankt voor jullie advies.

This beauty was made by Ester of Pierelantijntjes. 

It was a belated gift for my birthday and I'm sooo impressed and touched. 

Dit waanzinnig mooie cadeau werd gemaakt door Ester van Pierelantijntjes. 

Het is een verjaardagscadeau en ik ben er zò van onder de indruk.

On top of the parcel was an beautifully stamped envelope with this sweet card. 

The gift itself was wrapped in awesome paper which I kept too (of course). 

Bovenop het pakje lag een mooie bestempelde envelop en daarin deze lieve kaart. 

Het cadeautje was mooi verpakt (dat papier bewaar ik ook natuurlijk).

Let's untie the pink ribbon and take a closer look at this marvelous gift; a fabric book with a cute little key:

En dit is dan het prachtige cadeau: een boek gemaakt van stof, versierd met allerlei leuke dingen en een heel fraai sleuteltje. Laten we het roze lint eens openmaken en dit boek eens goed bekijken. 

Inside all wonderful pages and it even gets better: on the pages are little pockets which hide more surprises and boy has Ester done a great job, filling those pockets with the most gorgeous surprises, like the vintage paper spool of mending threat is in the first pocket. 

In het boek allemaal mooie pagina's en het wordt nog beter: op de bladzijdes zijn kleine zakjes en vakjes gemaakt waarin Ester weer van allerlei leuke hebbedingetjes verstopt had, zoals hier het antieke stopgaren.

Next are Valentines' pages. The French mailman is keeping an envelope which hides another surprise:

Two pages of Mother's day. Do you notice Ester used a different technique and details on every page?

Vervolgens twee pagina's over moederdag. Valt het jullie ook op dat Ester steeds andere technieken en materialen gebruikt?

A wedding theme. Look at that wonderful bow! The blue paper is flocked paper, sigh....not to mention that clasp, which is so me. 

Het bruidsthema. Kijk eens naar die geweldige strik. Het blauwe papier is fluwelig...zucht...oh en die gesp...past helemaal bij mij.

The Easter bag is filled with lavender and can be removed, but I won't! I'll keep this beauty complete, I love it just the way it is. In the Halloween pocket another present: 

Het zakje met de paasafbeelding is gevuld met heerlijk geurende lavendel en kan uit het boekje gehaald worden, maar dat doe ik niet, want ik vind het veel te leuk om het zo compleet te houden. 

Achter het Halloween plaatje wederom een andere, opnieuw zo leuk ingepakte verrassing:

In het cadeautje zit een klein winkelbordje van Haribo, snoeperig!

What a great gift. Every time I look at the book and now even when I look at the photos I'm so impressed. This book is so beautifully made, my photos just don't do Ester's labour justice. Ester, I think words an photos cannot express how I feel; thanks so much Ester for making me such a lovely festive year book. I'll keep it in a special place which I will show another time. 

Sinterklaas arrived today, but somehow I have a feeling that I have received the best present already,

En nu sluiten we het boek en eindigen we met mijn blogbanner. Wat een geweldig cadeau! Elke keer als ik er weer naar kijk en nu zelfs met de foto's ben ik zò onder de indruk. Dit boek is helemaal geweldig dat kunnen de foto's, zeker met dit donkere weer, onmogelijk goed weergeven. De foto's doen Ester's werk niet genoeg eer aan. Het is onmogelijk om haar genoeg te bedanken voor dit geweldige cadeau dat met zoveel zorg en aandacht is gemaakt. Toch probeer ik het: bedankt Ester voor dit prachtige stoffen jaarboek. Ik bewaar het op een speciale plaats, zodat ik er nog vaak naar kan kijken, maar dat laat ik een andere keer zien. 

Sinterklaas is vandaag aangekomen, maar op de één of andere manier heb ik het gevoel alsof ik het beste cadeau al binnen heb, geniet van het weekend, misschien krijg je wel inspiratie door Ester's boek,

Eline's huis

Afgelopen zaterdag, ik kondigde het al aan, was ik bij Pipoos waar  Eline Pellinkhof, de schrijfster van 'Eline's huis' was om haar boek te signeren. Zij had niet alleen alle projecten uit dat boek meegebracht, maar ook haar vriendin Helga, die verantwoordelijk is voor heel veel borduurwerk uit het boek.

Last Saturday, I told you before, I was at the book signing at Pipoos, where I met Eline Pellinkhof the author of 'Eline's huis' (huis=house) and her friend Helga, who has made a lot of the embroidery in Eline's book. Like this cushion, which is truly a masterpiece in my opinion:

Zoals dit kussen, dat ik echt een meesterwerk vind. Er was zoveel te zien en ik was ook nog eens te vroeg en zo onder de indruk dat de meeste van mijn foto's nogal onscherp zijn (flits niet aangezet :-(.

It was so much fun to see the projects of the book in real life and of course I was a bit overwhelmed and made a lot of photos without flash, which are all blurry :-(

 I had my book signed and even my photo taken with these lovely ladies. It was so nice to meet them in real life. 

Wel heb ik mijn boek laten signeren en ben ik zelfs met de dames op de foto gegaan. Ik vond het ontzettend leuk om deze dames te ontmoeten.  

Ik liet jullie al de kussens zien waar ik mee bezig was, maar bij 'Eline's huis' hoort ook een papier lijn

Hier zie je enkele kaarten gemaakt met die lijn, wellicht door deze talentvolle dame (ik ben het vergeten te vragen). Ik ben ook met het papier aan de slag gegaan: hier wat werk in uitvoering, het moet een slinger worden, ik kom er nog op terug. 

Now this time Blogger won't let me upload any more photos as I ran out of space grrrrrr and I have to purchase some more. I'll do that in the morning, or does somebody know how to avoid it? (it is only 5 bucks a year, but hey I'm Dutch!).

Give away and cushions

Ik was helemaal blij toen ik ontdekte dat ik Carina's give away gewonnen had. Carina heeft een hele mooie blog; Caatjes hofje. 

Het is steeds maar somber weer hier, eigenlijk te donker om foto's te nemen, maar dat heb ik toch gedaan:

I was totally thrilled when I discovered that I won Carina's (her beautiful blog is Caatjes hofje) give away! 

Too bad it is real autumn weather over here and hence too dark to take photos, but still... I did:

What about that? Some antique cutlery, a beautiful blue bowl that perfectly matches my French service and two lovely Braxton placemats. To top it of there was a rose candle light and a lovely card. 

Echt een hele mooie prijs: een prachtige schaal die precies bij mijn Franse serviesgoed komt en twee Braxton placemats die er ook helemaal geweldig bij staan. Schitterende  antieke vorken en om het helemaal af te maken nog een rozenkaars en een lieve kaart:

Thank you so much Carina! What a great give away, I hope to show you the bowl and the placemats again, when the sun is shining! 

Meanwhile it is perfect weather to do some sewing. I bought some Eline's home fabric and I'm making cushions: 

Heel hartelijk dank Carina, ik wilde niet langer meer wachten om hier een blog over te schrijven, maar ik hoop je de prijs binnenkort in actie te laten zien en dan met zonnig weer! 

Ondertussen is het natuurlijk wel perfect weer om weer eens achter de naaimachine te zitten. Ik kocht wat stof van Eline's huis en ik ben kussens aan het maken:
